3Ds Max

Summary:

3Ds Max is a 3-dimensional modeling and rendering software used for animation, graphic arts, photography, product development, architecture, and even some engineering. The main purpose is for the graphic arts while Autodesk, the manufacturer of 3Ds Max makes other software more specific for architecture and engineering. The software consists of a graphic user interface containing modeling and sculpting tools.

"Autodesk 3ds Max provides a comprehensive, integrated 3D modeling, animation, and rendering solution for game developers, visual effects artists, and graphic designers.
  • Powerful 3D modeling—With an extensive polygon modeling and texture mapping toolset, modelers and texture artists can work more quickly and effectively.
  • Advanced character rigging and animation—The fully integrated Character Animation Toolkit (CAT) provides an out-of-the-box advanced rigging and animation system.
  • Choice of integrated renderers—Artists can create highly realistic or stylized looks using the tightly integrated 3ds Max scan line and mental ray® renderers, including unlimited free mental ray network rendering to finish rendering faster.
  • Extensible pipeline support—Developers can customize, extend, and integrate 3ds Max into their existing pipelines with support for C ++ and .NET.
  • FBX Import/Export for Unreal pipelines—Create and animate models in Autodesk 3ds Max and export as Autodesk® FBX® files, and then import into Unreal® Editor."

Quotes:

“With 3Ds Max, I created exciting illustrations for these boards—illustrations that definitely catch the eye. And that’s important when it comes to snowboards. The design on the board—the
bright colors, and the mood and ‘attitude’ the board evokes—is a big selling factor.” – Frank Vitale

“It's almost like you're manipulating cloth, which is nice, especially when there's something wrong with your loft and you're not sure how to work it out," he continues. "You can go into the edit mesh modifier, edit the soft selection, and work it out in a few seconds. In addition, using a densified mesh denotes materiality, a useful characteristic in the 3ds Max visual work platform. This is a good tool to use when Jean Nouvel is reviewing your design because he visualizes the skin of a building as a malleable piece of cloth, not as something hard and over-simplified." - Andrew Hartness

Interest:

As I continue to comment on advertising I have continually run into ads that are completely computer generated or at least partially. I feel that I need to expand my tools in making art and take on 3D modeling and rendering. I hope to integrate this new tool into my work to be able to mimic ads more accurately and mimic ads that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. I also hope to use 3D rendering as a method of cost reduction in production.
