Ellen von Unwerth works with the female figure in a way that objectifies it whether viewers like it or not. She uses their image and form for advertising and doesn’t have a problem with it. I doubt the models do either since they are getting paid well to do so. Ellen finds a way to approach typical advertising campaigns and bring a new form of artistry and non-traditional methods of reaching a audience. Her work for Equinox is most appealing to me because of her methods of dealing with religion, sex, and class issues while still satisfying the client. The ads stirred up controversy around the country. I strive to blend commercial advertising with social issues.


Biography:
Ellen von Unwerth is a German photographer. Her early work was documenting the brothels and sexuality that surrounded her. She began work as a photographer doing commercial work after she gave up her modeling career. Before a modeling career she worked in the circus as an assistant to a knife thrower. Aside from shooting advertisements she began editorial shoots for elite fashion magazines. She has also done album covers and even music videos. Her work often deals with erotic femininity.
